I never get sent any knickers There are very few adult actors who can morph into
an adolescent at the click of a finger:Kris marshall's one of them. He's a
natural comedian, and at 41 years old he doesn't look a day over 30, dressed in
white converse hi tops, baggy denim jeans and grey t shirt, while his floppy red
hair hangs over his black ray ban specs. Kris can't help but crack a joke before
answering every single one of our questions, making it difficult not to picture
him in the role that catapulted him to fame, the sarcastic teenager nick harper
in bbc1's my family. Yet he's trying his best to convince us he's better in non
comedy roles. "I actually started off doing straight roles,"He tells love
sunday, as that natural smirk appears across his face. "I consider myself a
serious actor with a funny face and good timing, but maybe i'm just lying to
myself.I've done a lot of serious stuff that people don't recognise me ray
ban aviators sunglasses for. " Kris may be right, think back to ds luke
stone in itv's murder city or pasha in itv's doctor zhivago, but there is,
however, one role of his which we can't forget doting husband adam from the bt
adverts. Kris in those heart warming bt adverts His memorable performance in
over 40 ads may have helped raise bt's profile but, in an ideal world, kris says
he'd like to be known for more than a promoter of high speed broadband. "Some
people know me for my films, others know me for prison(Joke), others know me for
taking my kid to school,"Kris says. "Bt was great but it's three years since i
stopped doing those ads.But you don't get to choose what people think. As long as
they're not throwing mud at me it's fine. " And now, lucky kris is flaunting his
acting prowess reprising his role as di humphrey goodman in bbc1's death in
paradise, a detective series set in the idyllic caribbean islands of guadeloupe.
Sounds more like a jolly holiday than work to us! "I know what you mean, and it
is like that 80% of the time,"Kris explains. "You stand there on the beach and
you think,"It's lunch time, i might go for a swim".But then the other 20% it's
the hardest job i've ever done because it's so hot, i'm pssing with sweat. It's
like getting into a sauna, putting on a suit and doing hamlet. " And that's not
even mentioning the self inflicted pain he put himself under sampling the local
80 proof rum. "It's so strong everyone at some point or another falls foul of
the rum,"He laughs. "It's like drinking satan's urine.That's a nice way of
putting it.If you have three and you don't eat it's game over. The next day
you're sweating rum out of every pore. " Listening to his drunken pursuits, it's
hard to imagine that kris' wife of three years, hannah, 36, a yoga teacher who
he met in his home county of somerset, and baby son, thomas, Two, were also on
the caribbean islands during the six months of filming. "Don't get me wrong,
most nights i went home, had some dinner, saw my son if he was still awake and
went to bed because we were filming at 5.30am in the morning, ' Kris explains.
"But i'm not a monk, you couldn't do that day after day.So friday nights were
daddy goes crazy nights. " As talk turns to his wife and family, who live cheap ray bans
uk with him in bath, kris' body language changes he's more mature than
he likes to portray through his jokey demeanour. And since having his firstborn,
he's become rather picky about the acting roles he accepts. "I really consider
my roles quite carefully now whereas i wouldn't have done that before,"He says.
"I'm much more choosy because i want to spend time with thomas. For example, i
got offered a film in toronto on the back half of last year.Did i want to go all
the way there to do this film? No, not really. " Kris' little bundle of joy has
not only changed his perspective on life, but also forced him to accept a few
home truths he never realised before. "I'm not as chilled out as i think i
am,"He admits, swigging a can of coke. "I'm actually a real worrier.I worry
about myself but about my son too.If he's got the snivels i'm like,"Oh, what's
wrong with him? "I think it's always like that with your first child. If we're
lucky enough to have more kids i'll be like,"Yeah, whatever, sew the arm back
on, it's fine. "' Joshing aside, this kris marshall is very different from his
late 20 something self, when he played nick harper and life was one big party.
"There was a lot of attention, but i found out very quickly that i didn't like
it much,"He admits. "I loved it for a while but then i realised i'm really not
the kind of person who goes to premieres or hangs out at the groucho club. It's
all hollow.I'm happy with my mates down the local pub.Nowadays, no one bats an
eyelid anyway. They just go,'who's that old geezer?'. " Even though it's been a
while since hisHeyday, this old hand hasn't lost his touch just yet.He Still
gets fan mail sent to him, including the odd scary letter. "My mum looks after
my post when i'm away,"He says. "She read me a letter over the phone this summer
it was so bizarre i can't remember exactly, but it began, 'for the attention of
your sins' what does that even mean?It went on about something beginning to
permeate through the ether. It just sounded like something russell brand writes
in his book. " Surprisingly, there's one thing kris is yet to experience in his
20 odd years in the industry. "I've never got sent stuff,"He explains. "Like i
want to be sent pants or knickers. Why does no one send me pants?I could wear
them and everything i wouldn't even wash them. "
